Travel Advisory Notice
Updated February 8, 2025

We want to share some information to ensure you’re well-informed before committing to the retreat. Guatemala is currently rated as a Level 3 travel advisory by the U.S. State Department. This advisory recommends "Reconsider Travel" due to safety concerns, primarily related to higher crime rates in three specific areas. However, despite this advisory being in place, over 3 million U.S. citizens visited Guatemala in 2024 alone. Just last month, friends of ours enjoyed time in Guatemala, traveling with children + family.
For context, Mexico is on the verge of the Level 3 category, with several areas designated as “Do Not Travel.” Still, over 10 million U.S. citizens visited Mexico in the past year.
It's important to note that travel advisories can sometimes be misleading or not fully reflective of the on-the-ground reality in different regions. For example, both Australia and Canada have similar travel advisory systems. However, they classify Guatemala at a lower risk level than the U.S., advising the same level of caution as you would for popular European destinations like Italy, Germany, or Spain.
This retreat will take place in Lake Atitlán, which is not one of the areas listed in the advisory. The property where we’ll be staying, Villa Sumaya, has been welcoming guests since 2004. During this time, they have hosted hundreds of groups without incident and currently have dozens of retreats scheduled this year + next. It’s located in a peaceful, remote area near the village of Santa Cruz La Laguna, Guatemala, and is accessible only by boat. This exclusivity ensures a quiet and pristine environment, with the neighboring villages having virtually no crime.
You’ll be transported via private shuttles, operated by an excellent local company that handles Villa Sumaya’s group transfers. During activities, all guides are certified professionals who have worked with the property for many years.
During our exploration of Guatemala last year, this same travel advisory was in effect, and yet, our time was peaceful, with no safety concerns. We felt comfortable walking around day and night everywhere we traveled in the country. We specifically chose Lake Atitlán for the retreat because of its tranquility, beauty, and unique cultural environment.
We want you to feel confident in your decision and excited for your experience in Guatemala. If you have any questions at all, please email us. We are happy to talk with you!
